The event was overshadowed by the tragic loss of Glen Ragou and the weekend was held in his honour.

With weather more like early Autumn than mid Winter the travel to the Southern Manchester urban sprawl was as hazardous as ever. But there were only a dozen dropouts out of a total entry of 139. Pretty good considering.

WO60 – Winner Jane Law, parked up her Porsche, hood down no doubt and narrowly beat newcomer Celia Toogood, 4/9  7/9  9/4  9/7  9/6. The latter also beat Patricia Appleton.

WO50/55 – Karen Hume won the battle for an England place in the WO55 overcoming Lesley Sturgess easily 3/0. In the combined event, Rachel Woolford took out Hilary Kenyon 9/6  9/5  10/8 and then Shelley Walsh in the Final, 9/3  9/2  9/2.

WO45 – Izzy Tyrell, a rare refugee from either the Tennis, Racketball, Badminton Courts entered and took out Kay Fallows 3-0, Amanda Warren 3-1 and Alison Goy 3-0. All on the Saturday, no doubt back on the Tennis court on Sunday.

WO35/40 – Some tough battles here, especially Kate Bradshaw and Zoe Shardlow, nip and tuck until 8-9 in the fifth and Kate hits the easiest shot down, with Zoe stranded. Zoe won the Final v Sam Mueller, lots of rallies, 9/11 10/12 12/14.

MO70 – One or two surprises: Badrul Khan overcoming a lacklustre Brian Hardwick 9/0 in the fifth and David Hardern beating Mike Clemson, although the little dabbler did a ‘’ me**in ‘’ and claimed injury, 7/9  9/4  3/9  7/9.  Chris Ansell came back from the dead to lead 7/4 in the fifth v Wrighty, but the latter’s wrist cocked into prime form at exactly the right time. 9/7 to A.Wright. Match to A Wright. The Final saw BFD lead his weekly playing partner (I get a phone call when BFD wins. I had one last year) 9/2  5/9  9/0. An upset on the cards. Umm no, our soon to be 75 ex World Champ upped a gear or two and sailed through 6/9  3/9. However, IF THIS MATCH HAD BEEN PARS BFD would have won 3-0 easily!!

MO65 – Derek Collins no 1 seed and expected No 2 Barry Featherstone, unbelievably at a Salvation Army Tournament arranged by his manageress........    (Barry was distraught). Ian Graham, upped to no 2 seed and the rest a very strong draw. So much so, three 2015 England players went home on the Friday, all easily beaten, Messrs Norman, Pearse and Hendry...... Peter Smith (and Graham) are actually now playing their best ever squash, having both retired, and their match was a cracker, with Graham eventually coming through 9/1 in the fifth. Scot John Rae came unstuck against Collins and in the Final the latter found Graham just as fast and crucially the latter’s reverse angle won him many vital points. A big upset, in truth, but Graham was the worthy winner – 9/4  9/7  9/5. Plus, it was his first ever Regional title.

MO60 – A small draw and no Cowley or Alexander. However, after a tricky opener with newcomer Robert Hickson, World Squash Traveller and 2015 Trophy Lifter Stuart Hardy overcame the fist pumping, Strictly Come Dancing ballet machine, the one and only Simon Evenden, 7/9  10/9  (lucky Stuart) 9/5  9/10  9/1..... before taking out Paul Reader in the Final, 9/6  9/3  9/6. Earlier, Reader had gone some length to cementing an England place with a 3-1 victory over Ian Holmes, especially as Duleep Adihetty is 60 any day and requires his usual International Cap.

MO55 – Many missing here, but in truth will be interesting to see how newcomer, a blast from the past, Grant Miller fares later on this season, an easy winner here (his first Regional). In fact Miller only dropped 27 points all weekend, beating effervescent Neil Harrison, 9/5  9/6  9/4 in the Final. However, soon to return, Messrs Ockwell, Hurford and possibly Goulding for early 2016.

MO50 – Again a lull here, Pricey badly wounded, his wrist, and others not here. However, Ray Burke (better not forget the MBE) will still be uttering swear words as he led Peter Lonsdale 9/1 and 5/0. And then the wheels came off. Darren Withey at no 2 was unhindered all the way through and was too good for Lonsdale, in the final  0/9  1/9  6/9.

MO45 – Andrew Cross and David Youngs were obviously in Panto playing Santa because they were not at Stockport. But Yawar Abbas and Steve McLoughlin were, and both progressed to the Final, the latter not without some problems from Andy Normile, 11/8  6/11  11/13  2/11. The Final was on hot court no 1 and the rallies were relentless, but Yawar finally clinched the match 11/4 in the 5th after having at least 3 match balls in the fourth.

MO40 – Most players missing in the 35’s for varying reasons, but Joss Hargrave and Matt Stephenson took full advantage to gain valuable points, the latter beating Jago Nardelli, 4/11  11/7  2/11  9/11. In the Final, Hargrave won 6/11  10/12  11/5  11/5  11/4  to record his first win. Congratulations!!

MO35 – "Tyson" Gliddon entered the 35 as he wanted to be knocked out before he trie d to do the same in his white collar Charity boxing match on the Sunday in Plymouth. He was removed  11/4 in the fifth by Tom May. All to no avail as Nick Wall was in the draw, as was Jamie, 44 years old, Goodrich, starring as Peter Pan at Gorleston Empire Panto ....... He earlier nearly came unstuck v Jon Hunter 5/11 in the fifth, but the Final Wall edged the crucial points, 11/5  8/11  11/6  11/7.
And readers will all be pleased to know that Tyson knocked down his opponent in the first, before the result was declared a draw after 3 bruising rounds. Female/ Male supporters will be pleased to know the Devonian features were basically unmarked. See on YouTube.
