After 8yrs and nearly 40 Regional Open Tournaments in the England Squash Masters circuit, the 2011-12 season neared its end with the Midlands Regional at Coventry & North Warwickshire. With the National Championship next week, there is still all to play for.
For the first time in those 8 years the beloved chairman of ESM, Martin Pearse was absent, with suspected pneumonia.

To the squash:
The women's O55 event was won by Jane Law (Cheshire) who won the round robin group with Carolyn Roylance of Lincs second.
The Women's O50's saw a strong draw. Derbyshire's Lesley Sturgess edged past Jill Campion of Middlesex in 5 early on but fell to the powerful hitting of Avon's Helen Gould. Meanwhile a cold-ridden Tammy Bennett succumbed to Wale's star Lynne Davies. In the final Helen dominated with pace and power for her third title of the season.
The Women's 45's round robin ended with major England rivals Mandy Akin of Kent and Fran Wallis of Lincs. And it was another battle royal starting 9/10, 10/9 before Fran fell away leaving Mandy a 3/1 winner.
The women's 40's was won by Alison Goy ( Notts ) who took her first Regional title at the expense of Sam Mueller, Jill Chilvers & Alison Insley.
The 35's saw a second Regional title & an assured England place for Middlesex champion Lisa May who beat Rachel Calver 3/0 in the final.

And to the men:
Former 65's World Champion & webmaster Adrian Wright looked formidable in the 70's & it is difficult to see beyond him for the National title & later this summer the World Title. He overpowered Vincent Taylor in the final.
The 65's saw the rare defeat of Open & European Champion Rodney Boswell from Cheshire by Notts Dave Hardern who could not contest the final, due to adverse weather conditions, to Middlesex's Chris Goodbourne who was gifted his second title of the season.
The Mens 60's saw the fancied players fall - Allen Brown & Barry Featherstone - the top seeds & the mercurial Howard Cherlin. The was won by Peter Smith of Bucks who removed Cherlin & Brown & beat the ambidextrous Mick Broomhall of Cheshire in the final.
The Mens 55's are extremely competitive this year with all the top players on show. The recovering Mark Cowley & Duleep Adhihetty were absent but there were important matches to play. Ian Holmes (Northants) overcame the ferocious challenge of Durham's Colin Shields in 5 games & Stuart Hardy (Middlesex) staged two comebacks - 8/4 in the first & 8/1 in the second to win to win 3/0 aqainst the silky skills of Cumria's Ronnie Bell. Holmes and Hardy both fell to the top seeds Peter Alexander (Suffolk) and Rustom Bativala (Warks), who the had a no holds barred battle which Alexanders superb athleticism helped him triumph 3/1.
Ged Martin (Yorks) had a memorable weekend in the Mens 50's with five game wins over jeremy Goulding (Avon) & James Ockwell (Middlesex) to improve his chances of a first England cap. He fell in the final from 2/0 up to the warrior style of Ian Bradburn (Lancs) who, in trouble at 2/0 down just hit harder and ran faster. He had earlier removed top seed Chris Harland (Surrey) in 5.
In his first season in the Masters, Surrey 45 Champion Marc Aldridge has consistently troubled the top players & this time it was his turn. He had to survive a superb match with Martin Geear to win 10/9 in the fifth but went on to beat Durham's Pete Lonsdale in four in the final.
After a serious wrist injury Dave Youngs of Norfolk returned with his brand of clever,moving squash. He duly won defeating John Hanson (Yorks) 3/1 in the O40's final
The Mens 35's Paul Johnson (Wales) took full advantage of Jamie Goodridge's withdrawal and booked a finaL slot at Jago Nardelli's expense. Cheshire's Matt Lowery was a step too far however & Matt showing great consistency & atheticism won through for his second title in a row in 3 entertaining games.
