Terms and Conditions - Entering the British National Masters Championships

Parking

Parking at the Northern Club may be limited. Competitors are advised to use local hotels, such as the Premier Inn Manchester West Didsbury, which is within walking distance and walk to the venue. Alternatively there is Park and Ride at East Didsbury which is two tram (Metrolink) stops from the venue at West Didsbury. The Travelodge at Manchester Didsbury is also located next to the Metrolink at East Didsbury.

Registration Fees:

This event will cost £30.00 for which you will receive:

a minimum of two matches.
an event t-shirt.
free entry to the early rounds (less quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals) of the British National Championships being held at the National Squash Centre. This is subject to availability and issued on a first come first served basis.

The National Championships were for the first time run by England Squash Masters and there being no room at the National Centre, went down the road to the excellent facilities of Manchester Northern Tennis and Squash. There was a healthy entry of over 250 from all parts of the country and a great five days of competitive Squash.

The Women's 65s was won by Scotland's Faith Sinclair with Bette Dryhurst taking second, while in the 60s Wales No.1 Sian Johnson had another success against current World Champion Karen Hume of Kent.

Another Kent star fared better in the Women's 55s as Mandy Akin proved too athletic for former Champion Jill Campion of Middlesex. Warwickshire's Rachel Woolford took her first National title to go with three Regional wins this season. She had a very tight semi against former pro Sue Martin-Downhill scraping home 15/13 in the fifth but overcame Kay Fallows of Lancs in the final in straight games.

Surrey No.1 Shayne Bailley and Yorkshire No.1 Andrea Santamaria won through to the 45s final. Both were previous Champions and in a high class final, the Surrey woman came through 13/11 in the fourth. In the 40s Kent's Keeley Johnson has been unstoppable with National, British Open and European titles falling to her. Leicestershire's Rachel Calver stopped a run of losses here, however, with a gritty five game win in the final.

In the Women's 35s Lauren Briggs looks untouchable and the former circuit player showed her class again here. The only player to match her powerful game is Amina Helal of Lancs and as in the British Open a great quality final went the way of the Essex star in four tight games. Her fifth National in a row.

In the Men's Championships serial winner Pat Kirton of Surrey overcame John Woodliffe of Glos in four games in the over 80s, both men playing some remarkable squash. There was an upset in the 75s however, as top seed Mike Clemson (Yorks) was edged out 15/13 in the fifth by William Wilson of Cheshire who then went on to overwhelm four times World Champion Adrian Wright in the final.

The 70s final ended abruptly when many time champion and former GB No.1 Phil Ayton of Sussex ran into Barry Featherstone's racket in the second game and had to retire. Ayton had narrowly survived against Scotland No.1 and top seed Ian Ross while the Hampshire man had removed defending champion Rod Boswell in four.

The 65s is a very competitive group with a number of contenders. Judge John Goodrich of Suffolk has come out on top most of the season with four Regional wins and was top seed here. Cumbria's Terry Belshaw won through to meet him and at two games up was two points from glory before the Judge overruled him and sent him down in five. His first National title.

In the 60s new boy Allen Barwise of Lancs is making a mark with wins in Portugal and the Northwest Open. He removed Simon Evenden in the semis to set up a final against team mate Ian Bradburn who got through after Stuart Hardy had to concede. Barwise made it three in a row against Bradburn to take his first National title.

Mark Woodliffe is the outstanding player of the 55s and so proved yet again. Only Gary Raw of Herts could take a game and his final opponent Greg Loach of Derbyshire had battled twice as long with five game wins in quarters and semi final. The final was 3/0 to Woodliffe the defending champion.

The Men's 50s is another tight group with any one of four or five capable of winning it. Norfolk's Dave Youngs, with his vast array of shots and touch outplayed them all. Against former champion Yawar Abbass in the final he played winner after winner to take his first National Championship after 12 years of trying.

The 45s was dramatic as the seeds fell in close, hard matches and the brothers from Ireland, Nick and Rob Staunton won through to the final. Always fireworks with them on court, in a terrific battle it was Nick who took the final in five games.

Another Norfolk star, Jamie Goodrich prevailed in the over 40s. Playing his beautifully controlled game he eased through each round untroubled and beat Mick Biggs of Middlesex in the final who had beaten the Scotland No.1 Stuart Ayton and the England Captain, Jonathan Gallacher on the way.

The Men's 35s had some high quality players and the top seeds Andy Whipp of Cheshire and Peter Billson of Lancashire took their places in the final. It was all Billson on the day, however, as the 2017 Champion could make no impression. 3/0 to Billson.
