Our 11th year! Our very first tournament was at Bury St Edmunds in 2004 and Peter Alexander has duly arranged scorching weather every year since we have held it in September, 10 out of 11. (One was in December).

Another logistical sell out (and scheduling nightmare) saw 137 entrants. Luckily drop outs were scarce. When they happen they cause an incredible amount of grief, to the opponent concerned who has no doubt incurred an unnecessary Hotel cost, and to the organisers especially in the smaller round robins.  We have been very very lenient over the years, but there are some serial offenders............

In the WO55, Jill Campion led the pack, beating Karen Hume 3-0 in a toughie with Sue Pynegar third and Rebecca Moore 4th.

In the WO50, Tammy Bennett overcame Sarah Howlett, whilst the ultra quick Pippa Green narrowly went down to Fran Wallis. Wallis was in a fight in the Final nudging through 9/6, 9/10, 9/5, 9/3 v Bennett.

WO40/45 combined – Sarah Parr will be pleased with her efforts, beating all comers Sam Mueller, Alison Goy and Isabelle Tweedle. Mueller was runner up.

WO35 – Newcomers Kate Bradshaw and Maxine Dove gave good accounts of themselves but Katie Lawrence came through as the winner.

MO75 – John Preston edged 79 year old Malcolm Gilham 4/9, 10/8, 9/2, 2/9, 10/9 in a 60 minute thriller.

MO70 – With Mike Clemson electing to get knocked out really early in the MO65 so he could watch his beloved Ferraby United (he is their Mascot), it was a straight fight between Graham Fisher and Adrian Wright, with Ken Reid, Allan Whitlow and Nigel Belle chasing the leaders. Fisher sneaked the first 9/7, but Wright, after his customary start, edged up a gear 9/3, 9/4, 9/5  at the crucial points.

MO65 – Trevor Cox gained his best ever result beating former World O65 Champ Chris Ansell 9/7 in the fifth and then leading Martin Pearse 9/1 and 7/0. An upset was on the cards but then Pearse retrieved the situation 9/8, 9/6, 9/7 in an hour. Not good news for the Semi as Barry Featherstone had beaten Mike Clemson in 20 minutes. In the other half, Chris Wilson edged both Terry Norman and Chris Goodbourne 9/7 in the fifth before going down 6/9 in the 5th to Larry Grover. The Final saw Grover a little unlucky in the third and fourth over decisions and he very narrowly lost 9/5, 5/9, 9/2, 10/8 to a nervous Barry Featherstone who had up to then been in charge of all his matches.

MO60 – A small draw here with no ‘stars’ apart from Messrs Holmes and Cowley. No Drysdale, Lumsden, Hardy, Jackson, Bell or Adihetty. It came down to these two despite a wounding on Cowley on court... fortunately no red stuff this time ........ he recovered to win, (as usual) 9/2  9/0  10/8, the Northants player only getting his bearings on court at the 11th hour, after a weekend on his pushbike between different pubs and his village pub accommodation in Bury five miles away (with no hi-viz jackets).

MO55 – Great to see Ian Bradburn (in the middle of his chemotherapy – unbelievable!!) get to the Semi Final, beating newcomer George Kousseff 2/9, 5/9,  9/3, 9/6, 6/9 and then Tom Burton 7/9, 9/5, 4/9, 9/7, 4/9. However, the Semi v Goulding was a step too far.
In the bottom half, the former flying Doctor, Chris Harland has returned after a two year absence. Not as yet, in his previous racehorse condition, he still beat no 2 seed Mark Taylor 9/4, 9/3, 9/1  before finding Goulding a handful in the Final – 9/1, 5/9, 9/1, 9/4.

MO50 – Lots of tough games here, Darren Withey scraping through against Mark Hildred 7/9, 9/3, 10/8, 0/9, 9/7, whilst David Gray overturned Dave Box 9/6, 9/6, 3/9, 9/4 after the latter had beaten Ged Martin. John Parkes, as quick and fit as a greyhound, had an eighty minute battle with Leyburn Club owner Ray Burke 2/9, 9/4, 8/10, 10/8, 9/5 in the Semi but was unfazed and won the Final 9/7,  /10,  /9,  1/9.

MO45 – Welcome back to Glen Ragou, fresh from a couple of severe cancer removal operations, and smiling just the same as ever.... considering what he has gone through this was an incredible performance---  he went down narrowly to Steve Dodridge.
Newcomer Riz Sheik gave notice of intent, beating no 4/5 seed Duane Harrison 3-1 in the very first round. He then stretched Peter Gunter all the way, 5/11, 8/11, 12/10, 9/11 and this impacted in Gunter’s semi final against the mobile David Youngs, 2/11, 7/11, 11/7, 9/11. In the bottom half, Steve McLoughlin beat Andy Normile 6/11, 11/1, 11/4, 11/6, but then went down to Colin Payne 11/2, 11/13, 9/11, 11/4, 5/11. This lengthy battle obviously damaged the returning to match fitness Payne who had previously beaten Jon Lilley 3-1. The Final saw Payne leading 10/6 in the second, but Youngs put together 6 unanswered volley drops and this broke the camel’s back so to speak, 11/6, 12/10, 11/5.

MO40 – Saw Mike McLaughlin tough it out against local Steve Maitland, whose love of lager was probably the difference, judging by the first 40 minutes and the last 20. Isn’t fitness a funny thing?! In the bottom half Jonathan Glidden eased into the Final but found McLaughlin just ahead at the vital times. Close, 11/8, 17/15, 8/11, 11/6, but in McLaughlin’s favour, a professional job well done.

MO35 – saw Jamie Goodrich halfway to the O45’s, playing down 7+ years. And I may say, as fit as any of the ‘youngsters’. Newcomer Adam Giles, who looks like a cage fighter, gave a real notice of intent, beating Alistair Coker 3-1, Dean Newberry 3-0 before going down to the no 1 seed James Bowden, 11/6, 11/8, 11/8. Goodrich nearly copped it in the first round against Marcus Hayes, 11/8, 12/10, 3/11, 8/1,1  8/11, then winning 3-1 v Tim Richards and Mick Briggs, 6/11, 11/9, 6/11, 6/11. All long drawn out affairs.
And so the Final came to pass. Bowden, incredibly talented, fit, but not nearly as fit as Goodrich... Question was, what might have happened if JG had edged the third ??... Goodrich was 7/3 up in the third, (6/11,7/11  to Bowden) and the Leicestershire player was distinctly tired. But he rallied back and nudged the third 11/9 and with it his first Regional.

Congratulations to Peter Alexander for hosting the Tournament, Ann Bissett for the food, Mike, Paul and Pete for the Sunday Finals marking and Brian and Roz for administering justice at the Tournament desk.
